Proven Primary Care Health Outcomes for Patients

There are many reasons to join an MDVIP-affiliated practice: Conveniences like same- or next-day appointments; visits that start on time and last as long as you need; a close relationship with a physician who really knows you and your health needs. Add to that list: A model that’s been proven to work.

Studies published in peer-reviewed medical journals show patients in MDVIP-affiliated practices are hospitalized and readmitted less often, visit urgent care centers and emergency rooms less often, receive more preventive services and enjoy better control of chronic conditions than patients in traditional practices.

Advanced cardiovascular screening

MDVIP-affiliated doctors are also finding more patients at risk for serious cardiac events. In a study of 95,000 patients, researchers found MDVIP-affiliated doctors identified 40 percent more people at risk for heart attack or stroke than standard cholesterol tests. The study, published in the journal Future Cardiology, highlighted tests in MDVIP’s Wellness Program, which use a multimarker approach to measuring heart disease risk. This approach is important—50 percent of heart attacks occur in people who have normal cholesterol levels.

Fewer emergency room and urgent care visits

In addition to fewer hospitalizations, patients in MDVIP-affiliated practices also less likely to use an emergency room or an urgent care center than patients in traditional primary care practices, according to a study published in Population Health Management in 2016. Healthcare system costs for patients in MDVIP-affiliated practices were also less over the three-year term of the study.

Fewer hospital admissions

Fewer Hospitalizations with MDVIP

Preventable hospitalizations can happen at any age, but they’re especially common among older adults. Health policy makers, insurers and health organizations have all made preventing unnecessary hospital admissions a top priority. The MDVIP model of personalized primary care is producing real results. A study in the American Journal of Managed Care found that Medicare patients who joined MDVIP-affiliated practices were hospitalized 79 percent less than their peers in traditional primary care practices. Patients with private insurance were hospitalized 72 percent less than patients in traditional practices.

Better control of chronic conditions

Patients with chronic conditions like atrial fibrillation, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol also do better in the MDVIP model. A study in the International Journal of Person Centered Medicine analyzed medical charts for patients with these four conditions. Looking at industry benchmarks for preventive screenings and good control of chronic conditions, patients in MDVIP-affiliated practices were in the top 10 percent nationally.

Better doctor-patient relationship

doctor patient relationship

Research has long shown that strong doctor-patient relationships lead to better health outcomes. The doctor-patient relationship is core to the MDVIP model. The result isn’t just healthier patients; it’s happier patients. According to research published in The Open Public Health Journal, 97 percent of patients in MDVIP-affiliated practices reported being satisfied with their relationships they have with their doctors. By contrast, just 58 percent of patients in a traditional primary care model said they were satisfied. Patients in MDVIP-affiliated practices were also happier with their ability to contact their physicians during and after office hours.
